Why Are My Shoulders So Tight?
Desk Posture, Phones and Simple Shifts

Most of us carry the day in our shoulders. Here is what causes the tightness and gentle shapes that may help it ease.

You notice it at about four in the afternoon. Your shoulders have crept up towards your ears, your neck feels short, and rolling them back buys you roughly ninety seconds of relief before they climb again.

The encouraging part is that this is one of the most responsive areas in the body. Shoulders tend to soften quickly once you give them a bit of regular attention, and it genuinely does not take long. Our yoga for shoulders classes are built around exactly this.

What Is Actually Going On Up There

Three things usually stack up. First, most of us spend hours with our arms out in front of us - keyboard, steering wheel, phone - which lets the chest shorten and the upper back round. Second, when we are busy, breathing gets shallow and high, and the shoulders start helping out with every breath. Third, we hold still. Tissue likes movement, and a shoulder that has not been anywhere new since breakfast will feel stiff.

A Gentle Reminder

This is general wellness guidance rather than medical advice. If you have shoulder pain that is sharp, spreading down your arm, or not settling, please speak with a healthcare professional before starting a new practice. Yoga works best alongside their guidance.

Five Shapes Worth Knowing

None of these need a mat, and most can be done in whatever you are wearing right now. Move slowly, keep the breath easy, and back off the moment anything pinches.

  • Eagle arms - crosses the forearms to open across the upper back, where a lot of desk tension collects.
  • Cow face arms - one arm up, one arm behind, using a strap or towel if your hands do not meet. Most people need one, and that is completely normal.
  • Extended puppy - knees down, arms forward, chest towards the floor. A long, quiet stretch through the shoulders and upper back.
  • Thread the needle - a gentle twist that reaches into the space between the shoulder blades.
  • Sphinx - forearms down, chest lifting. Opens the front of the chest that all that forward reaching has shortened.

The Daily Tweaks That Matter Most

The two minutes on the mat matter, and so do the other fourteen hours. Raise your screen so the top of it sits near eye level. Get your elbows supported rather than hanging. Set a reminder to stand up and reach overhead once an hour - not a whole routine, just a reach. And check in with your breath a few times a day: if your shoulders lift when you inhale, let the belly do more of the work instead.

How Soon Will It Feel Different?

Most people feel something within the first session - shoulders sitting lower, a bit more room to turn the head. The change that lasts comes from doing a little most days rather than a lot once a week. Give it a few weeks of short, regular practice and see how the four o clock slump compares. Results vary, and going gently is part of the point. If your neck is involved too, yoga for a stiff neck covers that side of things.
